Henry News – June 16, 2008

Congratulations are extended to Becca Bjerke who was chosen this past week to represent South Dakota at the World Leadership Congress to be held on the campus of George Washington University in Washington, DC July 25 – August 2. Becca was selected while attending the Hugh O’Bryan Youth Leadership seminar on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. The Hugh O’Bryan Youth Leadership seminar is set out to help young people make a difference and become positive catalysts for change, in home, school, workplace and community. While attending the seminar or also know as HOBY, Becca had to prove herself by way of interviews, projects and a number of other ways characteristic of a community leader. A project that Becca was involved with this week was the setting up of an Alex’s Lemonade Stand across from the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Alex’s Lemonade Stand is so named following the death of four year old Alex Stone due to cancer. Alex wanted to earn money to help others with kid cancer to fight off the disease. Proceeds from all yearly stands go to the fund. While attending the World Leadership Congress in Washington DC Becca will join with 500 high school students from around the world for an intensive educational program. Becca is the daughter of Jena Johnson and Jerry Bjerke.
